2011 Mason-Dixon Rhododendron Show & Sale

Like most of the chapters of the American Rhododendron Society, the Mason-Dixon Chapter holds a show every spring, highlighting the azaleas and rhododendrons that are blooming at the time. Due to the mysteries of Mother Nature, the display varies from year to year, changing if the season is early, average or late. In 2011, the show will be held once again on Mothers' Day weekend at the Carroll County Agricultural Center in Westminster, Maryland. The dates are Saturday, May 7, from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM, and Sunday, May 8, from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM.

Expert advice and educational materials will be available, and rhododendrons, azaleas, and numerous companion plants, such as hostas, hollies, and numerous perennials, will be offered for sale by the chapter and selected vendors. There should be a number of native plants available as well. This year two of our members will also offer handmade crafts that would make great gifts for Mom!

The highlight of the event will be the chapter's annual truss show, featuring flowers from many different varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas. This year's show will be a joint show with the Potomac Valley Chapter of the ARS. In addition to ribbons, a number of prizes will be awarded to the top entries, including the "People's Choice Award," decided by the popular vote of all attendees.

The Carroll County Agricultural Center is located just off Route 32 in Westminster, near the Carroll County Hospital Center. The old entrance to the Ag Center from Smith Avenue has been blocked off, and there is now a separate entrance off Gist Road, about 200 yards north of Smith Avenue. Look for our sign at the entrance to the complex and directional signs as you are driving in. Be cautious as you are driving in, as the road is not always in the best of condition.
